KPop Demon Hunters 2 in Development: Sony and Netflix in Talks for Sequel
KPop Demon Hunters has been taking Netflix by storm for almost two months now, securing the top spot worldwide and shattering records on streaming platforms and music charts alike.
With the massive success of the first film, all eyes are on a possible sequel, and recent updates indicate that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is already in the works.
According to reports from Puck, Sony Pictures Animation is currently in talks with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to bring KPop Demon Hunters 2 to life.
Even though Netflix is responsible for distributing the film, Sony holds the production rights, giving them the final say on whether the sequel moves forward.
Despite the astronomical success of the original film, Sony reportedly only made around $20 million from their deal with Netflix, raising questions about the financial feasibility of a second installment. The first movie had a production cost of $100 million, and a sequel is expected to be even pricier, considering factors like casting, singing talent, and licensing fees.
In an exciting development, Arden Cho, the voice of Rumi, expressed her hopes for the sequel to explore her character’s love interest, Jinu. In the first movie, Jinu sacrificed himself to protect Rumi and the world, but Cho teased that his fate might take a different turn in the fantasy world of the sequel.
While there’s no official release date yet, the complex animation process suggests that fans may have to wait a few years for KPop Demon Hunters 2 to hit their screens, much like the gaps between Sony’s Spider-Verse films.
