Cost-driven Unsubscribing Trends in Top SVoD Services
Are you thinking about hitting pause on your Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney+ subscription? Turns out you’re not alone! A new report from Ofcom reveals that cost is the main reason why folks in the UK are unsubscribing from these popular streaming services. Around 4-6% of Brits have bid adieu to at least one of these platforms in the last three months.
For Netflix users, 24% felt they weren’t getting their money’s worth, while 23% weren’t too happy about the rising costs, and another 22% just found it too pricey. Amazon Prime saw a similar trend, with 35% of subscribers citing underuse and cost as the key reasons for unsubscribing. And for Disney+, a whopping 37% said it was all about the expenses.
Despite all the streaming options out there, about two-thirds of UK households are still signed up for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney+. Among these, Netflix comes out on top, boasting the highest number of subscribers at 59%, followed by Amazon Prime Video with 46% and Disney+ at 25%. Surprisingly, 19% of UK households have all three services!
As for changes in viewing habits, more subscribers are opting for ad-supported plans. The report shows that the number of Netflix subscribers using the ‘Standard with Ads’ tier has more than doubled from 13% in 2024 to 28% in 2025. Disney+ also saw a spike in ad-supported subscriptions, jumping to 23% from just 7% in the previous year.
So, if you’re debating whether to stick with your streaming subscriptions or hit the cancel button, you’re not alone. Cost is a big factor for many, but it seems like streaming services are adapting to meet the needs of their subscribers with new ad-supported options.
