Major streaming platforms dominate 92% of sports programs
Leading streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, and Paramount+ have been steadily expanding their TV, movie, and sports offerings. According to Gracenote, a Nielsen company, these platforms collectively added about 4,500 new titles, representing a 5% increase in available content from February to May.
Among these services, Netflix saw the most significant growth in content, with an 18.2% increase in its catalog during the second quarter. Apple TV+ followed with a 3.7% growth rate, followed by Amazon Prime Video (3.2%), Disney+ (1.6%), and Paramount+ (1%).
When it comes to sports content specifically, the top five streaming platforms experienced a 7.8% increase in Q2. This growth rate outpaced both movies and TV shows. Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Netflix emerged as the key players in sports programming, offering a wide range of live games, news, highlights, and documentaries.
Overall, TV programs saw a 6.9% increase across all platforms, while movies went up by 4%. As Bill Michels, Chief Product Officer at Gracenote, points out, effective content discovery plays a crucial role in helping viewers find the entertainment that resonates with them the most.
