Disney Plus Transformation: From Affordable to Expensive Streaming Service

If you’re a Disney+ subscriber, get ready to see a change in pricing soon. Since its launch in 2019, Disney+ has increased its price by a whopping 172%. That’s quite the jump in just a few short years!

Back when Disney+ first hit the scene, it was one of the cheapest streaming services around at $6.99 per month. In comparison, Netflix was charging $8.99 for its basic plan, HBO Now was priced at $14.99, and Apple TV+ had a mere eight original shows for $4.99 a month. Hulu, owned by Disney, had just lowered its ad tier to $5.99 per month.

But the streaming landscape has changed a lot since then. Prices have been going up across the board, with ad-supported tiers becoming more common. And with Disney’s latest price increase coming in October, Disney+ and Hulu are now some of the pricier options out there.

In fact, Disney has raised its prices four times in four years. And that’s not all – the company plans to merge Disney+ and Hulu into a single app next year. CEO Bob Iger mentioned on an earnings call that this consolidation could lead to even more price increases down the line.

But it’s not all about the money. Disney hopes that combining the two apps will create a better user experience and ultimately reduce subscriber churn. So while you may be paying more for your Disney+ subscription soon, you might also be getting a smoother, more seamless streaming experience.
