Alex Woo on Building ‘In Your Dreams’ From Scratch: How Netflix Approved the Series

Alex Woo and Erik Benson directed and produced the new animated feature, “In Your Dreams”. The film tells the story of siblings Stevie and Elliot who venture through the world of dreams in search of a mythical figure called the Sandman. Their goal is to have the perfect family. Stevie, voiced by Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, and Elliot, voiced by Elias Janssen, find themselves working together in their dream world, encountering strange characters like a talking stuffed giraffe named Baloney Tony, zombie breakfast foods, a man-eating hot dog, and the queen of nightmares.

The team behind the film, including also Timothy Hahn and Gregg Taylor, shared that the idea for “In Your Dreams” started as scribbled notes on a pizza box and eventually got picked up by Netflix. The story was revealed at the Annecy festival as a work in progress, receiving positive feedback.

After leaving Pixar to establish Kuku Studios, Woo brought his personal touch to the film, drawing from his own experiences to create a heartfelt and imaginative story. The film’s journey from concept to production is an inspiring tale of creativity and dedication that highlights the power of dreams and storytelling.
