Bryan Cranston Discusses ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Reboot Cast and Hal’s Shirt

It’s almost been two decades since we last saw the Wilkerson family on our screens, but Bryan Cranston has shared his excitement about the upcoming Malcolm in the Middle revival with PEOPLE. The actor, known for his role as Hal in the single-camera family sitcom, recently revealed what he loved most about filming the revival at a May 21 FYC event for his new AppleTV+ show, The Studio.

Cranston, now 69 years old, expressed his joy at slipping back into the character of Hal, whom he described as a sweet and lovable guy. He shared how rewarding it was to reunite with the whole family on set and cited the fun they had filming together. The original cast will be returning for the revival, including Jane Kaczmarek as matriarch Lois, Frankie Muniz as boy genius Malcolm, Christopher Masterson as Francis, and Justin Berfield as Reese.

While some cast changes have been made for the reboot, like Caleb Ellsworth-Clark replacing Erik Per Sullivan as Dewey and Anthony Timpano portraying Jamie instead of twins James and Lukas Rodriguez, fans can still expect the same chaotic family dynamics. Additionally, new characters such as Malcolm’s daughter Leah and his girlfriend Tristan will be introduced, played by Keeley Karsten and Kiana Madeira, respectively.

Cranston also shared a fun detail about getting back into character for the revival, mentioning a distinctive short-sleeve patterned shirt that Hal wears that helped him embody the character once again. The miniseries reboot, consisting of four episodes, finished filming in May but does not yet have a release date.

Aside from his return to Malcolm in the Middle, fans can catch Cranston as a recurring guest star in AppleTV+’s The Studio, a satirical cringe comedy series. The Disney+ logline for the Malcolm in the Middle revival teases Malcolm and his daughter being drawn into the family chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party. With his recent projects and the buzz around the revival, Cranston continues to captivate audiences with his versatile performances on screen.
