Emily Sonnett: USWNT Call-Up

Gotham FC Defender Emily Sonnett Gets Call-Up to USWNT

US Women’s National Team head coach Emma Hayes recently announced the 24-player roster for the upcoming friendlies against China and Jamaica. Gotham FC defender Emily Sonnett is the only player from the squad to make the cut.

Sonnet, who joined Gotham in 2023, boasts 107 caps for the USWNT since her international debut in 2015. Hayes selected Sonnett for the roster while other regular USWNT players like Tierna Davidson and Rose Lavelle are out due to injuries. Midfielder Midge Purce, who just returned to the Gotham lineup after overcoming an injury, also did not receive a call-up.

Former Gotham players Mandy McGlynn and Crystal Dunn, now with Utah Royals and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, also made the team roster for the upcoming friendlies.

The USWNT will first host China at Allianz Field in St Paul, MN, on May 31, followed by a game against Jamaica at Energizer Park in St. Louis on June 3. Both matches will be broadcast on various networks, including TBS, HBO Max, Universo, Peacock, and TNT.

Here’s a breakdown of the full roster:

– Goalkeepers (3)
– Defenders (8)
– Midfielders (6)
– Forwards (7)

Gotham FC is making waves in the Concacaf W Champions Cup, advancing to the final after defeating Club América 3-1 in Mexico City. The team will now face Tigres UANL in the championship matchup on May 24.

In their recent match against the San Diego Wave, Gotham FC fell 1-0 with 17-year-old San Diego midfielder Kimmi Ascanio scoring the only goal. The team has experienced a goal drought, losing their third straight match.

Gotham FC was held to a scoreless draw at home by the Chicago Stars. The game saw a near break in stalemate by 14-year-old McKenna Whitham, but ultimately ended without any goals, resulting in Chicago Stars FC going home with a point.
