Which State is Enhancing the Streaming Experience? – GovTech
Do you ever notice that your TV volume seems to blast when commercials come on during your favorite show? Well, it’s not just in your head, and luckily, things are about to improve. Governor Gavin Newsom of California recently signed state Senate Bill 576 into law, requiring streaming platforms to lower the volume of ads.
Starting on July 1 of next year, ad-supported streaming services in California will have to ensure that the volume of advertisements matches the content. This law mirrors the FCC’s 2012 standard for regulating ad volumes on broadcast and cable services. Streamers will need to demonstrate that the volume of ads on their platforms does not exceed the volume of the shows or movies they interrupt.
The best part? This change is likely to benefit users outside of California as well. It will be much simpler for streaming platforms to apply these standards universally rather than adjusting them for each user based on their location. So get ready for a more enjoyable streaming experience with ads that don’t make you reach for the remote!
