Black Panther Disney Plus Series Season 2 Facing Challenges Amid Studio Bankruptcy

The future of Disney+’s Black Panther-inspired show “Eyes of Wakanda” is uncertain after news of a major setback. The series debuted this summer as a highly anticipated animated anthology, with reactions divided between critics and fans. While reviewers gave it a solid score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were less impressed, rating it at just 52%.

Despite coming from Marvel Animation, the show’s stunning visuals were actually brought to life by Axis Studios in Scotland. Unfortunately, Axis’s recent closure and bankruptcy have cast doubts on the possibility of a second season for “Eyes of Wakanda.” Forbes reported that the studio faced financial challenges due to the pandemic, Hollywood strikes, and inflation, ultimately leading to its collapse.

Although the original show’s lead animator, Axis Media, is no longer in the picture, there’s still a chance Marvel Studios could continue “Eyes of Wakanda” Season 2 by working with a different animation studio. However, given the mixed reception of the first season and Marvel’s streamlining of Disney+ content, the future of the show remains unclear.

The Black Panther spin-off’s unique historical placement within the MCU timeline offers endless storytelling opportunities, with potential for more tales of Wakandan heroes and villains over the years. The show was part of a five-year exclusive deal made in 2021, which may or may not be renewed upon its expiry. Director Ryan Coogler is currently committed to “Black Panther 3,” slated for release in 2028, leaving questions about any upcoming Wakandan projects for Disney+.
