Uncovering the Truth Behind the Apple TV+ Movie “The Lost Bus”
Paul Greengrass, known for directing films like United 93 and Captain Phillips, is now bringing a new story of heroism to Apple TV+ with The Lost Bus, set to premiere on Friday, October 3. This white-knuckle ride follows a school bus driver played by Matthew McConaughey and a school teacher played by America Ferrera as they work together to save 22 children from a deadly wildfire.
Based on real events and the book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson, The Lost Bus tells the tale of bus driver Kevin McKay’s bravery during the devastating Camp Fire in Paradise, California. This fire, sparked by a Pacific Gas and Electric Company power line, burned 153,336 acres of land, destroyed 19,000 structures, caused billions of dollars in damage, and tragically claimed 85 lives.
Kevin McKay, who had recently started working as a bus driver at Ponderosa Elementary in Paradise, sprang into action on November 8 as the fire spread rapidly. Despite losing his own home in the flames, McKay took it upon himself to evacuate the children who were stranded at the school, along with two teachers, through the terrifying inferno.
As McKay drove the bus to safety, surrounded by flames and smoke, he remained focused on the children’s well-being. Even in the face of chaos and danger, he made sure every child was safe and reunited with their parents after a harrowing five-hour journey.
Despite being hailed as a hero by those he saved, McKay humbly credited the firefighters and first responders who were also working tirelessly to contain the fire. The real-life events that inspired The Lost Bus showcase the power of human bravery in the face of unimaginable circumstances.
Don’t miss the premiere of The Lost Bus on Apple TV+ this Friday for a gripping and inspiring story that highlights the courage and selflessness of ordinary people in extraordinary situations.
