Glen Powell and Cast Discuss Chad Powers, Tom Brady, and More
Glen Powell and his team had plenty of options when they set out to create their new football comedy “Chad Powers,” debuting on Hulu this Tuesday. But for Powell, known for his roles in “Anyone But You,” “Hit Man,” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” staying true to a love for the game was a top priority. In the show, Powell plays Russ Holliday, a former college quarterback whose dreams of going pro are dashed by a costly mistake on the field. After an infamous public meltdown, he attempts a comeback by disguising himself as Chad Powers to try out for the struggling South Georgia Catfish team.
Powell, who also co-wrote and executive produced the series, wanted “Chad Powers” to have a mix of emotions, drawing inspiration from classic sports movies that sparked his passion for the industry. With co-creator Michael Waldron, they aimed to create a show that was both hilarious and dramatic, setting a high bar for quality entertainment.
On the football front, the Manning brothers, Eli and Peyton, former NFL stars and executive producers of the show, lent their expertise to elevate the authenticity of the game scenes. The project was inspired by a sketch from Omaha and ESPN involving Eli, who used a similar disguise during a tryout. Powell shared that working with the Manning brothers and their team brought invaluable insight to the production.
In the world of Chad Powers, the quirky and unconventional nature of the characters adds a unique twist to the typical football narrative. From the unlikable yet talented Holliday to the oddball charm of Danny, the team mascot, the show brings fresh dynamics to the game. The character of Coach Byrd, played by Quentin Plair, navigates the challenges of managing a team with a deceptive new star player.
While Holliday/Powers may not fit the mold of a traditional football hero like Tom Brady, the show offers a different perspective on the sports world. Powell humorously acknowledges Brady’s superior looks and stature, drawing comparisons between the real-life football icon and his fictional character. As for the dynamic between Powell’s character and Steve Zahn’s Coach Hudson, it’s clear that “Chad Powers” thrives on playful contrasts and unexpected relationships between its characters.
With input from industry veterans like the Manning brothers and a talented ensemble cast, “Chad Powers” promises to bring a fresh and entertaining take on the world of football, blending humor, drama, and heartwarming moments for viewers to enjoy.
