Latter-day Saints’ Perspective on Lake Powell: A Heavenly Destination
have always wondered what the latest status symbol in LDS circles is – well, according to Rebbie Brassfield, it just might be a houseboat trip to Lake Powell. She describes Lake Powell as our Celestial Kingdom, embodying the importance of family in the LDS community. As someone who recently revisited Lake Powell after 15 years, I can attest to the nostalgia and memories this place holds. It seems like Lake Powell has been making appearances all over social media lately. From Whitney Leavitt wakeboarding to Jaxson Dart throwing a football off a houseboat, the adventures seem endless.
These modern Lake Powell adventures definitely look different from my own experiences, and I’ve found myself feeling a bit protective over my memories. With reality shows like “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” and “Are You My First” shining a spotlight on Latter-day Saint subcultures, it’s clear that our community is getting noticed in the entertainment world. But I want to share the Lake Powell I know – the one filled with childhood summers in the sun.
Growing up, my family would caravan down to Lake Powell every summer for a week on a houseboat with all my cousins. The journey was long, but the destination was worth it. Our days at Lake Powell were a mix of water sports, sun-soaked fun, and quality family time. We had our own collection of water toys, from ski boats to air chairs, and our days were filled with endless water skiing, Red Vines, and late-night card games. Looking back, those summers feel like the epitome of family bonding and good, clean fun.
While my Lake Powell experiences have evolved over the years, the memories remain cherished. I may have switched to Bear Lake for our family trips now, but the magic of Lake Powell still holds a special place in my heart. And even though I may not have a boat of my own, the allure of Lake Powell is still strong. As my parents continue to make trips to Lake Powell in their 70s, I can’t help but feel a tug to return to that sacred place that holds so many precious memories.
Whether it’s the extravagant houseboats or the massive singles trips, Lake Powell seems to have taken on a new identity in recent years. But for me, it will always be a symbol of family, fun, and summer adventures. And as I reflect on the changing landscape of Lake Powell, I can’t help but be grateful for the memories and experiences that have shaped my love for this beloved destination.
