Marvel Zombies Review: Watching All Four Episodes on Disney+ and Wanting More
Marvel Zombies is Marvel’s first adult animated TV show, and I have some mixed feelings about it after watching all four episodes on Disney+. When the show nails it, it’s incredibly terrifying, gruesome, and darkly appealing. But, unfortunately, it falls short in its storytelling department, which leaves it as a series that’s good at times, but not consistently great.
Marvel Zombies is a continuation of a story from What If…? season 1, specifically episode 5 titled ‘What If… Zombies!?’. This new animated series is aimed at a more mature audience and takes viewers on a journey through a world overrun by zombies caused by a catastrophic virus outbreak. The show focuses on a group of superpowered individuals, led by characters like Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Riri Williams/Ironheart, and Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, as they try to find a way to save what’s left of humanity.
The show’s focus on this new generation of superheroes is refreshing, with Khan being the central character around whom the story revolves. The series also features other familiar faces like Shang-Chi, members of the Thunderbolts, Moon Knight, and Blade (who is combined with Moon Knight to create Blade Knight). Seeing these new heroes take the spotlight in a post-Avengers: Endgame world is definitely one of the show’s highlights.
While Marvel Zombies does deliver on the gore and action, it struggles to maintain a compelling narrative throughout. Like many of Marvel’s recent animated projects, it seems to fall short in the storytelling department. However, if you’re a fan of dark and gory visuals, and enjoy seeing the next generation of superheroes step up, Marvel Zombies might still be worth a watch.
