Top One-Season Sci-Fi Series Available for Streaming on Disney+
Deadpool movies. Other noteworthy cast members include Jewel Staite (best known outside of Firefly for her role in Stargate Atlantis), Summer Glau (who starred in both Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Arrow), and Alan Tudyk (the star of Resident Alien and one of the best voice actors in the world).
By themselves, each member of the Firefly cast (including fellow Serenity crew members played by Ron Glass, Sean Maher, Gina Torres, and Adam Baldwin) is captivating enough to headline their own TV show. Collectively, they form an insanely talented ensemble, and watching them fight, flirt, and everything in between is almost as engaging as their adventures in deep space. This makes Firefly what I call a “vibes show;” one of those TV series that is fun to rewatch just because you want to hang out with these characters and bear witness to their endlessly funny banter.
One of the things that make Firefly so compelling is its great world-building that never disrupts the show’s masterful storytelling. By the end of its short runtime, the show fleshes out the deep backstory of the Alliance, provides lore for its fearsome Reavers, teases out our heroes’ mysterious backgrounds, and so much more. Joss Whedon left nothing on the table with this show, and it does more rewarding world-building in about half a season than most Star Trek shows have for the entirety of their run.
When Firefly came out, critics liked it but didn’t love it, and the show currently has a good (but not great) Rotten Tomatoes critical score of 77 percent. Notably, though, the show has an audience score of 96 percent, indicating just how much mainstream audiences dig this sci-fi series that burned so brightly before burning out. All that fan love resulted in the release of Serenity, a 2005 film that provided a satisfying coda for this Emmy-winning television series.
Will you agree that Firefly is one of the best sci-fi shows in the Verse, or is this one show that you’d rather feed to the Reapers? You won’t know until you stream it on Disney+ and see what all the fuss is about. I’m confident you’ll fall in love with this show and spend the next few decades quoting its witty dialogue to friends, family members, and anyone else who will listen.
