Jamie Lee Curtis Discovers Surprising Link Between New Film ‘The Lost Bus’ and Her Late Mother
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis recently shared an intriguing family connection related to her new movie, “The Lost Bus.” The film, which she produced, is based on real events from the 2018 Camp Fire tragedy in Paradise, California, one of the deadliest wildfires in the state’s history.
During the world premiere of the movie at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Curtis met with the real-life individuals who inspired the story. The film stars Matthew McConaughey as Kevin McKay, a school bus driver who, along with school teacher Mary Ludwig (played by America Ferrera), worked to save 22 children from the devastating fire.
Curtis revealed that Ludwig shared a surprising connection with her – Ludwig’s father had dated Curtis’s mother, Janet Leigh, in Merced, California. This unexpected connection brought a sense of kinship and resonance to Curtis and the cast.
Another special aspect of the movie was the involvement of McConaughey’s family. McConaughey’s son Levi and 93-year-old mother Kay both appeared in the film. Levi’s interest in acting led him to audition for a role, with support from his father, McConaughey.
Director Paul Greengrass had a specific request before viewing the audition footage: to remove Levi’s last name and evaluate the performance solely based on merit. The young actor impressed the casting team, eventually earning a role in the movie.
Overall, “The Lost Bus” brought together a diverse cast and crew whose personal connections and dedication to the project made it a meaningful experience. The film tells a poignant and impactful story based on true events and highlights the importance of community and resilience in the face of disaster.
