Review: Attempting to Mimic “The Office” – A Critique
In “The Paper,” a new mockumentary series on Peacock, the creators of “The Office” try to capture lightning in a bottle again. Set in a struggling newspaper in Ohio, the show follows the daily grind of a ragtag group of employees who are more accustomed to clickbait than reporting real news.
Led by a new editor-in-chief played by Domhnall Gleeson, the staff is enthusiastic but lacks the basic skills needed to run a newspaper efficiently. Despite their best efforts, the paper seems doomed to obscurity as a forgotten relic of the past.
While the show aims for humor and heart, the reality of a struggling news industry makes their efforts seem less charming and more concerning. The suggestion that journalism should be done on a volunteer basis rather than a profession can be off-putting for those in the field who are fighting to keep their jobs.
“The Paper” may not be winning over audiences on NBC, but those curious to see it can catch it on NBCUniversal’s streaming platform. Whether or not the show can capture the success of “The Office” remains to be seen, but for now, there are better options out there for those craving a workplace comedy fix.
If you’re in the mood for a hilarious newsroom story, consider checking out the 1994 movie “The Paper” starring Michael Keaton instead. For under four bucks, you can rent it digitally and experience a more entertaining take on the chaotic world of journalism.
