Bluey Gender: Boy or Girl?
Bluey, the lovable blue heeler from the hit animated show, spends her days having fun with friends, chatting away, and going on adventures. Even though the show doesn’t make a big deal about it, Bluey and her little sister Bingo are both girls. We can tell because their parents always refer to them as “she” and “her” or “the girls.” In one episode, Uncle Rad mistakenly calls Bluey a “he,” but Bluey quickly corrects him, saying, “I’m a girl.”
If you haven’t paid close attention, you might not have realized their gender. The characters rarely wear clothes or stick to gender stereotypes. In fact, Bluey’s dad Bandit is often the one taking care of the kids, while her mom Chilli fixes things around the house.
The creator, Joe Brumm, based many aspects of the show on his own life. Growing up in Brisbane, Australia, his family had a blue heeler named Bluey, just like the character. Joe and his wife are also raising two daughters, similar to Bluey and Bingo’s family dynamic.
The show is a real family affair, with Joe’s relatives voicing characters and local children playing Bluey and Bingo’s friends. Gender stereotypes are pretty much absent from the show, as Joe believes it’s important for viewers to see themselves reflected onscreen.
With hints in the last episode of the season, we might see Bluey and Bingo growing up in future episodes. It would be interesting to see how their characters evolve as they get older and how being girls might change things. Joe Brumm has mentioned that he’s received many requests to age up the characters, which could completely change the show. So, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next!
