Spanish actress Verónica Echegui, known for her role as Marta in Apple TV+’s Love You to Death, passed away on Aug. 24 at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital after battling cancer at the age of 42, per Variety.
Echegui started her acting career in 2006 when she was cast in My Name is Juani by Spanish director Bigas Luna. Despite mixed reviews, she received her first Spanish Academy nomination for her outstanding performance. Over the years, she earned nominations for her work in films like My Prison Yard, Katmandu, and My Heart Goes Boom, along with winning the Best Fiction Short Film award for her directorial debut, Tótem Loba, in 2022.
Following the tragic news of her passing, friends and colleagues such as Spanish actor Antonio Banderas expressed their sadness on social media. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also acknowledged Echegui’s talent and humility, emphasizing the impact she had on Spanish cinema.
Although she appeared in indie films like Bunny and the Bull with Noel Fielding, Verónica Echegui didn’t star in her first major American production until three years later. She made her mark with a role in The Cold Light of Day alongside Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, and Henry Cavill. Later on, she played a translator in Prime Video’s Book of Love with Sam Claflin.
Her former co-star, Sam Claflin, paid tribute to Echegui with a heartfelt message on social media, lamenting the loss to cancer. This news has left the entertainment industry and her fans devastated.
