22 TV Series Awarded California Film Tax Credit as Applications Rise by 400%
California is rolling out the red carpet for nearly two dozen television shows, with 22 series set to receive incentives for filming in the state. This exciting news comes after the recent enhancements to California’s film and TV tax credit program, which have led to a nearly 400% increase in applications.
According to Colleen Bell, the executive director of the California Film Commission, these incentives are a much-needed boost for the entertainment industry in Hollywood. With production facing challenges like pandemic slowdowns, strikes, and filming moving outside of California, the state has upped its annual cap for the incentive program to $750 million, up from $330 million.
The 22 selected shows are set to receive a total of $255.9 million in credits and are projected to generate around $1.1 billion in economic activity within California. This is fantastic news for the industry, as these productions are expected to employ 6,500 cast and crew members, along with over 46,000 background actors.
Among the selected series are new projects, recurring shows, and even some that relocated to California from outside of the state. Exciting additions to the lineup include Apple TV+ comedy “The Studio,” legal thriller “Presumed Innocent,” and CBS’ “NCIS: Origins.” Notable names like comedian Larry David, Kenya Barris, and Dan Fogelman are also part of the mix, bringing their creative talents to new projects that have qualified for the tax credit.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his pride in California maintaining its status as the entertainment capital of the world and emphasized that the expansion of the film and TV tax credit program is key to preserving that legacy. With all qualified projects in this round receiving a tax credit, the state is solidifying its reputation as the go-to destination for film and television production.
This recent wave of incentives underscores California’s commitment to supporting the entertainment industry and ensuring that the Golden State remains at the forefront of film and television. Exciting times lie ahead for Hollywood and the countless creative professionals that call California home.
