Kpop Demon Hunters: Box Office Success in Limited Release

“Kpop Demon Hunters” has hit a home run at the box office, raking in a whopping $18 million during its opening weekend. This animated musical initially gained popularity as the second-most streamed film on Netflix since its debut in June, eventually surpassing Zach Cregger’s horror flick “Weapons” in its third weekend in theaters.

Fans of the film rushed to theaters to catch a special “sing-along” version, hosted by Netflix for a limited one-weekend run. The movie was shown in approximately 1,700 theaters across the U.S. and Canada, with an impressive 1,100 screenings selling out.

While Netflix has not disclosed the exact earnings from this big hit, reports from industry insiders suggest that “Kpop Demon Hunters” likely made between $18 million-$20 million at the box office. “Weapons” held onto the second-place spot, bringing in an estimated $15.6 million in its third weekend—dropping slightly from its $24 million second-weekend haul.

In a surprising turn of events, “Kpop Demon Hunters” also made waves on the music charts. The soundtrack soared to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart for top-selling albums, with three tracks securing spots in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Golden” landed at No. 2, followed by “Your Idol” at No. 4 and “Soda Pop” at No. 10. In addition, five more songs from the soundtrack made their mark on the chart.

Since its release in June, “Kpop Demon Hunters” has been viewed an astounding 210.5 million times, totaling 350.9 million hours of watch time on Netflix. This makes it the second-most watched film on the streaming platform, only trailing behind the 2021 action-comedy “Red Notice,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson, which has accumulated at least 230.9 million views.

Overall, “Kpop Demon Hunters” has proven to be a massive success both in theaters and on streaming platforms, captivating audiences with its unique blend of animation, music, and storytelling.
