Happy Gilmore 2 Breaks Nielsen Charts Record for Streaming Ratings
Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler’s beloved golf comedy, made a big splash on Netflix according to Nielsen’s streaming charts. In fact, this 29-years-later sequel set a record for the most viewed movie in a single week in Nielsen’s five-year history of tracking streaming numbers.
During its debut weekend from July 25-27, Happy Gilmore 2 racked up an impressive 2.89 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States. That’s quite a bit more than the previous record holder, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which had 2.889 billion minutes in a full week back in 2022. It’s important to note that Glass Onion had a full week to reach that number, while Happy Gilmore 2 managed to surpass it in just three days.
To give you a sense of the magnitude of those numbers, 2.9 billion minutes of watch time is equal to about 24.58 million full viewings of the 114-minute movie. And according to Netflix’s internal data, the movie had a total of 46.7 million views around the world during its opening weekend. Interestingly, the U.S. TV screens accounted for about 52 percent of that global total, according to Nielsen.
Adam Sandler and Netflix have had a fruitful partnership over the years, resulting in the release of 10 movies in the past decade. In fact, Nielsen reports that Sandler’s movies, including those that were first released in theaters and later found their way to Netflix, have accumulated a whopping 61 billion viewing minutes on the platform.
