Vanessa Kirby and Benjamin Caron’s Intense Netflix Thriller Unfolds in One Night
In the new Netflix thriller “Night Always Comes,” Vanessa Kirby and director Benjamin Caron team up again after their work on The Crown. The movie, based on the book by Willy Vlautin, unfolds in just one night in Portland, Oregon. Kirby’s character, Lynette, races against time to secure $25,000 to save her family’s home, with her brother Kenny by her side.
Caron shared that he and Kirby had been searching for the right project, and when Kirby connected with the character of Lynette, they knew they had something special. The director wanted to create a tense film, and he found the perfect recipe in this story.
After working on the Apple TV+ series Sharper, set in New York, Caron was drawn to the working-class setting of Portland for “Night Always Comes.” He admired the city’s charm and how it reflected real-world issues like gentrification and homelessness.
The film’s storytelling is unique as it unfolds through Lynette’s perspective, with each character she encounters bringing their own rich history into the mix. Caron emphasized the importance of fully realizing each character’s journey on screen, making them feel like living, breathing people before and after the film’s events take place.
One standout character is Scott, played by Randall Park, a former escort client of Lynette’s. Caron wanted to ensure that Scott, despite his flaws, was portrayed as a complex individual with his own struggles and pressures.
“Night Always Comes” promises to be a gripping, character-driven thriller that delves into the lives of desperate people navigating tough circumstances. With Kirby’s talent leading the way, this single-night odyssey through Portland is set to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
