South Park Removed from HBO Max: What Happened?
If you’re a fan of South Park and have been searching for it on HBO Max, you might have noticed that it’s no longer there—and won’t be coming back anytime soon. After five years of being available on HBO Max, all 26 seasons of the iconic animated satire have officially transitioned to a new platform.
For years, HBO Max was the ultimate destination for South Park marathons. However, the streaming deal between HBO Max and the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, came to an end. The dynamic duo made a monumental $1.5 billion, five-year agreement with Paramount, resulting in South Park finding a new home.
Under this new arrangement, Paramount+ has become the exclusive streaming platform for South Park in the United States. Fans can now enjoy every previous season on Paramount+, with new episodes from Season 27 dropping on the streaming service the day after they premiere on Comedy Central.
This transition has been in the works for quite some time. In 2019, Warner Bros. Discovery secured the U.S. streaming rights to South Park from Season 1 to Season 23, including future episodes up to Season 26. However, when Paramount Global launched Paramount+ in 2021 and struck a deal for South Park movies with Parker and Stone, tensions arose between the media giants.
The rivalry between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount escalated in 2023 when lawsuits were filed. Warner accused Paramount of breaching their agreement and drawing viewers away from HBO Max, while Paramount fired back, claiming Warner was late on licensing payments. This legal battle left the fate of South Park’s streaming future uncertain, especially as Paramount engaged in acquisition talks with Skydance Media in 2024.
Finally, just before the premiere of Season 27, Paramount and Skydance completed their merger on August 7, 2025, enabling Parker and Stone to finalize their new deal. South Park will now be available exclusively on Paramount+ for at least the next five years. The sudden removal of South Park from HBO Max has left many subscribers surprised.
Meanwhile, South Park wasted no time stirring up controversy in its new streaming home. Season 27 kicked off with sharp political satire targeting figures like Donald Trump, his allies, and even federal agencies such as Homeland Security. Episodes have taken aim at personalities like JD Vance, Kristi Noem, and Charlie Kirk, ensuring that the show’s reputation for provocation remains firmly intact.
