Prime Video has just announced the upcoming debut of a new mystery series titled “Human Specimens,” set to premiere on December 18. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, this five-episode series will be available for viewers worldwide to enjoy simultaneously.

Based on a novel by renowned Japanese mystery writer Kanae Minato, known for her bestseller “Confessions,” which was also adapted into a successful film, “Human Specimens” tells the chilling tale of Professor Shirô Sakaki. A butterfly researcher who admits to turning six young boys into what he refers to as “human specimens.”

Starring Hidetoshi Nishijima, a highly respected actor in Japan whose fame reached new heights after his role in the Oscar-winning film “Drive My Car” (2021), the series promises a mesmerizing portrayal of Professor Shirô Sakaki’s character. Alongside Nishijima is Somegorô Ichikawa, a young star from Kabuki theater making his debut in contemporary drama at just 20 years old.

Directed by veteran filmmaker Ryûichi Hiroki, known for his insightful approach to human psychology in award-winning films like “April Bride” and “The Waxing and Waning of the Moon,” the series delves into universal mystery drama themes with a unique Japanese aesthetic, incorporating butterfly imagery and intricate storytelling.

According to Thomas Dubois, Head of French and Japanese Originals at Prime Video, “Human Specimens” is a dark and compelling series that tackles profound questions about life and love. The collaboration between Nishijima, Ichikawa, and Hiroki has brought the original novel’s power to life, delivering an intense and unforgettable viewing experience that transcends cultural boundaries.

Expressing their excitement about the project, Nishijima, Ichikawa, and Minato all highlighted the depth and complexity of the story, its themes of parent-child relationships, human nature, and the pursuit of beauty. Director Hiroki emphasized the series’ exploration of humanity’s fascination with beauty through intricate visuals and storytelling elements.
