Prime Video’s ‘War of the Worlds’ Review: A Disaster in the Best Way

War of the Worlds on Prime Video is an experience like no other. From the moment Ice Cube’s character picks up a WhatsApp call and declares, “I’m not your daddy,” you know you’re in for a wild ride. Critics haven’t been kind to this sci-fi thriller based on H.G. Wells’ classic novel, with a mere 3% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But sometimes, a movie is so bad that it’s actually good, and this one falls squarely in that category.

The film takes a unique approach by presenting the invasion through the lens of a computer screen, a technique known as “screenlife.” While this format has worked in other movies, it feels limiting and disconnected here. You never quite feel the full impact of the alien invasion when everything is viewed through a screen recording. Plus, the movie’s special effects can only be described as dated, with some of the worst CGI seen since the early 2000s.

Ice Cube’s performance as William Radford is a standout element, albeit not in the way the filmmakers intended. His serious portrayal clashes with the overall tone of the film, resulting in unintentional comedy gold. His dramatic reaction shots have even become internet meme material, adding to the movie’s quirky charm.

While War of the Worlds on Prime Video may not be a cinematic masterpiece, it’s a trainwreck you can’t look away from.
