Netflix in Talks for Home Run Derby Deal

Netflix is dipping its toes into sports content, with recent reports hinting at potential talks with Major League Baseball. If these discussions pan out, Netflix could potentially strike a deal to air the annual Home Run Derby that’s usually quite the hit with baseball fans.

According to Lucas Shaw and Hannah Miller of Bloomberg, Netflix is showing interest not just in the Home Run Derby but also in other baseball programming. The Home Run Derby is part of the package ESPN recently gave up that also includes Sunday Night Baseball and playoff games.

Even though ESPN walked away from the deal earlier this year, there has been little movement from MLB on securing new partnerships. Netflix was reportedly in talks with MLB back in February, but it wasn’t clear what these discussions entailed. Now, the streaming giant joins a list of potential suitors for the ESPN package.

It makes sense for Netflix to consider the Derby. It’s a popular event that often attracts younger viewers and could be a valuable addition to Netflix’s lineup of content. Plus, picking up singular sports events aligns with Netflix’s strategy rather than committing to whole seasons.

Netflix hasn’t shied away from securing live sports rights lately. The platform already broadcast NFL games on Christmas Day, snagged rights to FIFA Women’s World Cup, and even made a big play for USGA golf tournaments. So, delving into baseball wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Netflix.

While things are still up in the air, it’s fascinating to see Netflix exploring new areas of entertainment, possibly bringing the thrill of the Home Run Derby to our screens in the near future.
