Eatontown Approves First Phase of Netflix Studios at Fort Monmouth
The Eatontown Planning Board recently gave the green light for the first phase of Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth. This means that Netflix is now one step closer to starting construction on a 12-soundstage production facility that will span parts of Eatontown and Oceanport.
In this initial phase, four soundstages will be built in Oceanport, surrounding the McAfee Center on Route 537. The center is set to be renovated and expanded for production-related activities. Oceanport has already approved Phase 1A, and Phase 1B will soon be presented to them as well.
The part of Phase 1A located in Eatontown will be the site of a stormwater detention basin, replacing the now-demolished Bowling Center. At a recent presentation by Netflix, details of this section were discussed, with some alterations being made based on feedback from board members.
One topic of discussion has been the perimeter security wall that will surround the complex. Originally, the wall was planned to be visually interesting, with different panel styles and artistic designs or plaques commemorating the fort’s history. However, recent adjustments made by Netflix designers, including the removal of these design elements, have raised concerns among board members and the public.
Residents like Yvonne Bova, who has a personal connection to Fort Monmouth, have expressed their desire to preserve the fort’s legacy. In response, Netflix has agreed to consider re-incorporating these design elements in Phase 1B. The company has also made changes to a decorative wall at one of the main entrances, where their iconic red “N” logo will now stand alone on a grassy area lit from the front.
Additionally, plans for a walking trail along the redevelopment area have been discussed. This path will be built in phases, with Netflix’s portion linking with existing segments to create a cohesive loop. A mill within the studio complex has also been separated into two buildings for better aesthetics without compromising functionality.
Overall, Netflix’s proposed studio at Fort Monmouth is moving forward with Phase 1A approvals and plans for Phase 1B in the works. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project unfolds.
