It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Carl Frederick Barker, known to his loved ones as Fred. He peacefully departed this life on Monday, June 16th at the age of 96, joining his late wife Genevieve Barker in eternal rest.

Fred’s journey began in Smithville, West Virginia, as the youngest son of Carl and Opal Barker. Venturing to New York City as a young man, he embarked on a career as a butler at the prestigious Peacock Point estate on Long Island. It was there that he met and wed Mary Theresa Kelliher, and together they welcomed their son Frederick Timothy Barker.

After the closure of Peacock Point, Fred continued his butler duties at Mrs. Alisa Mellon Bruce’s estate in Syosset, where the family enjoyed many joyful years in a cozy cottage on the property. As times changed and grand estates faded away, Fred shifted gears and pursued a new path as a nurse at the state hospital in Sykesville, Maryland. He dedicated himself to working with troubled adolescents, finding fulfillment in serving others.

Upon retiring, Fred returned to Parkersburg to be close to his sisters, Mary and Fannie Lou, and their families. It was in Parkersburg that he found love once again, marrying Genevieve Barker and sharing many more happy years together.

Fred leaves behind his son Tim and daughter-in-law Nancy, grandson Brendan and his wife Madison, granddaughter Emiko and her husband Anthony, as well as great-grandsons Maclin and James. While he is reunited with his parents, siblings, and wife in heaven, his memory will forever be cherished by his family here on Earth.

A memorial service in honor of Fred will take place at the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on Friday, August 15th at 11 a.m. Those who wish to send flowers can do so to the funeral home, and an online guestbook for condolences is available on their website.

Fred’s legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love of his dear ones for all eternity.
