Introducing Roku’s Affordable Streaming Service: Say Hello to a Budget-Friendly Option

With the rise in prices from some streaming services, Roku is introducing a new budget-friendly option in the US. It’s called Howdy, and it only costs $2.99 per month with no ads. This sets it apart from other platforms like Netflix and Disney+, which may start at higher prices but include ads in their content.

While Howdy may not have the biggest library of content, Roku promises that it will include almost everything you want to watch. The service will offer nearly 10,000 hours of entertainment from partners like Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FilmRise, as well as some Roku Original titles. Expect to see popular movies like “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Blind Side,” and TV shows like “Weeds” and “Kids in the Hall.”

However, during its initial launch, Howdy will only be available on Roku TVs and streaming devices, as well as the Roku website and app. Roku plans to later expand availability to other platforms. This limitation may change, but for now, it’s a consideration for potential subscribers.

Roku is banking on the potential success of Howdy, noting that they already have 125 million customers in the US. CEO Anthony Wood emphasizes that Howdy, priced lower than a cup of coffee, is meant to complement premium services, not compete with them. Howdy will also be integrated into Roku’s existing Roku Channel, which already offers free content supported by ads.

If you’re interested in trying out Howdy, the new streaming service is set to launch today in the US. Roku hasn’t yet revealed a way to subscribe, but keep an eye out for more details as they become available.
