20 Years After Hurricane Katrina: Robin Roberts Documentary Coming Soon to ABC

ABC, Hulu, and Disney+ have exciting news for viewers—a new documentary special, “Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts,” is coming soon. Robin Roberts, known for her insightful reporting, revisits the Gulf Coast region two decades after Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on her extensive reporting experience, she sheds light on the lasting impact of the storm, sharing stories of resilience and updates on a community still working to recover from one of the most devastating natural disasters in American history.

During the special, Roberts explores New Orleans, where the city’s recovery has been influenced not just by reconstruction efforts but also by the resurgence of its vibrant music scene and cultural traditions. She sits down with Harry Connick Jr. at the New Orleans Jazz Museum to discuss the origins of jazz music and the revival of Jazz Fest post-Katrina. Roberts also visits her hometown of Pass Christian, Mississippi, reconnecting with her roots by visiting her old high school and local spots. She talks with Chipper McDermott, the former mayor of Pass Christian, about the rebuilding journey. The special features interviews with artists such as Trombone Shorty, Tank from Tank & The Bangas, and Branford Marsalis.

Reflecting on the documentary, Robin Roberts shared, “It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years. I went back to my hometown of Pass Christian to report on all the damage and heartache in the Gulf Coast region. What we touch upon in the special is that our experiences can serve as a guide for others going through challenging times, whether it’s floods, fires, or other hardships.”

Produced by ABC News Studios and Rock’n Robin Productions, with Rudy Valdez directing, the special is set to air on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT on ABC and will be available for streaming the following day on Disney+ and Hulu. International release details for Disney+ have not been announced yet.
