Lionel Messi’s Injury in Leagues Cup with Inter Miami
Lionel Messi had a tough outing in Inter Miami’s recent match against Necaxa in the Leagues Cup. The Argentine star had to leave the game early due to an injury he sustained just a few minutes in. As defenders closed in on him, Messi went down on the field clutching what seemed to be his right hamstring or groin area. He received immediate treatment on the sidelines but eventually had to walk off the pitch.
Unfortunately, Coach Javier Mascherano had to make a quick decision to substitute Federico Redondo in place of Messi. Mascherano updated the press post-match saying that Messi felt discomfort, and the severity of the injury would only be clear after further evaluation.
This setback is not Messi’s first this year, as he had previously struggled with adductor and thigh strain problems earlier in the year. Despite the injury, Messi has had an impressive season so far, with 18 goals and nine assists in 18 league appearances.
Inter Miami will face Pumas UNAM next in the Leagues Cup and then return to MLS action against Orlando City. The team, led by Messi, will look to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup. It’s worth noting that Inter Miami clinched the Leagues Cup title back in 2023 with Messi at the helm.
