The Watcher Returns in 5th MCU Disney+ Project
Marvel Studios recently featured The Watcher in its fifth Disney+ project, the Eyes of Wakanda series. The Watchers are cosmic beings in the Marvel Universe known for observing the Multiverse without interference, even in troubling situations. The character Uatu the Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright, had a significant role in the first animated show, What If…?. The concept of The Watchers was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with a surprising post-credit scene featuring Stan Lee.
In Episode 4 of Eyes of Wakanda, titled “The Last Panther,” The Watcher makes a cameo appearance observing events in Wakanda. This marks The Watcher’s fifth appearance in animated projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), further expanding his presence since his debut in What If…? Season 1.
While The Watcher’s appearance in Eyes of Wakanda is voiceless, fans still get to see him observing from above Wakanda. Jeffrey Wright does not return to voice the character in this cameo, but other notable actors provide their voices for the episode. This includes Steve Toussaint, Zeke Alton, Anika Noni Rose, Debra Wilson, Gabriel Burrafato, and Kesha Monk.
The Watcher has made previous appearances in popular MCU Disney+ series such as What If…?, where he was voiced by Jeffrey Wright as Uatu. Season 1 featured various exciting storylines, including his involvement with the Guardians of the Multiverse to combat Infinity Ultron. The most recent season closed out with Uatu facing trial among his fellow Watchers for his interference in the Multiverse, leading to an epic conclusion.
Additionally, The Watcher appeared in I Am Groot, an animated series focused on everyone’s favorite talking tree. In X-Men ’97, The Watcher appeared in Episode 5 during the Hellfire Gala, and he also featured in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 1 finale. In each appearance, The Watcher brought his unique perspective and observations to the unfolding events, creating an intriguing narrative thread across different MCU projects.
