Verizon CTO Josh Arensberg on Revolutionizing Live Sports Streaming with Private Networks

Verizon’s Chief Technology Officer of Media and Entertainment, Josh Arensberg, discussed with Streaming Media how they are changing the game in live sports streaming by using private 5G networks. This technology is allowing for innovative cloud-based workflows, real-time AI, and immersive fan experiences in the world of sports.

At the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in 2024, Verizon showcased how in-arena 5G technology enabled 12 ISO camera feeds to be streamed to the cloud for instant replay during NHL games. Since then, Verizon has been working on cutting-edge advancements, including a broadcast solution powered by AI in collaboration with AWS, Zixi, and NVIDIA.

This AI-driven technology allows for personalized replay channels, predictive clip prioritization, integration with FanDuel, and ultra-low latency delivery. This means that fans and broadcasters can expect a more engaging and interactive experience while watching live sports events.

Verizon has continued to evolve its 5G-powered Intelligent Broadcast Edge framework, working closely with partners like the NHL, AWS, and Zixi. This has enabled them to produce live games entirely in the cloud, encoding multiple camera feeds and controlling data over 5G networks. The introduction of AI into the mix at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) event has further enhanced the capabilities of this technology for live sports production.

The use of AI in managing multiple camera feeds and selecting the most compelling content in real-time has revolutionized the way live sports broadcasts are created and personalized for viewers. With the integration of AI-driven solutions like NVIDIA accelerated computing, directors can now focus on delivering a more dynamic and engaging production for audiences.

Verizon’s partnership with FanDuel at NAB highlights the potential for in-game prop betting and how the mobile framework can support and automate production workflows for companies like FanDuel TV. This collaboration is opening up new avenues for innovative experiences in live sports streaming.

Looking ahead, Verizon is working on projects like the IBC Accelerator Program, which focuses on creating personalized fan experiences during live broadcasts. This initiative aims to enhance the second-screen experience for fans in a way that resonates with them wherever they are watching a game.

As sports consumption trends evolve, Verizon is adapting to cater to younger generations who prefer highlights, short-form content, and social media interactions over traditional linear broadcasts. By collaborating with partners, Verizon is able to deliver tailored experiences that meet the needs and preferences of modern sports fans.
