Cast of Hulu’s ‘Washington Black’: The Story Behind Fantasy ‘Protect the Dreamers’
Hulu’s newest mind-bending series, “Washington Black,” has finally hit our screens, bringing with it breathtaking visuals, epic adventures, and a thought-provoking exploration of identity.
Based on Canadian writer Esi Edugyan’s novel of the same name, this action-packed series follows the life of Washington Black, a young boy born into slavery in Barbados. But for Washington, freedom is just the beginning of an exhilarating journey that takes him from the grips of enslavement to daring escapades spanning Barbados to Nova Scotia.
Led by a stellar cast featuring Sterling K. Brown, Ernest Kingsley Junior, Eddie Karanja, Iola Evans, and Edward Bluemel, the show promises an unforgettable experience that delves into themes of hope, trauma, and resilience.
Showrunner and producer Selwyn Seyfu Hinds shared, “I was drawn to the story because it has a message of finding hope in darkness and finding light out of trauma and resistance.” Similarly, Kimberly Ann Harrison expressed her enthusiasm, highlighting the unique perspective of the series, saying, “I had never seen a story told through the lens of a young boy like this, in this way, and not living in trauma but in discovery.”
Through daring adventures involving airships, pirates, and dangerous ocean voyages, “Washington Black” paints a radical portrait of a Black boy on a quest to define his destiny beyond the bounds of slavery. Breaking away from the often-traumatic portrayals of Black history, this series offers a fresh, tender, and expansive view of Black life that celebrates innovation, adventure, and humanity.
Lead actor Eddie Karanja, who plays Young George Washington “Wash” Black, summed it up best, stating, “There’s no story like this. The lens in which this is told from, from this young boy and this journey, this worldwide escort will be one that will stick in your memory.”
