Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York Reopens After Nearly 8 Years

The Waldorf Astoria New York, a beloved historic hotel in the heart of the city, closed its doors for renovations back in 2017. After almost eight years and billions of dollars invested, it’s finally opening up again, reimagined for the 21st century.

New York City is home to many lavish hotels, but few are as iconic as the Waldorf Astoria, known for Peacock Alley and its famous Waldorf salad. For the past decade, the hotel has been hidden behind construction, but now, under new ownership, it’s ready to welcome guests once more.

Originally two separate hotels, the Waldorf and the Astoria, the hotel came together in its current location in 1931. Over the years, it hosted celebrities, dignitaries, and even hosted events like the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1972, hotelier Conrad Hilton fulfilled his dream of owning the Waldorf-Astoria, calling it “the greatest of them all.”

In 2014, the hotel changed hands to Anbang Insurance Group in a record-breaking sale, but after some turmoil, the property ended up with Dajia Insurance Group. Now, after an extensive renovation, the Waldorf Astoria is reopening with a fresh new look.

Inside, guests will find many of the hotel’s classic features restored to their former glory. The iconic clock, commissioned by Queen Victoria, now gleams anew, while the historic Peacock Alley has been brought back to its original 1931 design.

A team of architects painstakingly studied old photographs and archives to recreate details from the original plans, like the lobby’s stunning marble floor mosaic. The famous Waldorf clock has also been lovingly restored by a team of experts, ensuring it looks as beautiful as ever.

So, take a step back in time and experience the magic of the Waldorf Astoria, a true gem of New York City.
