Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy Update: What You Need to Know

Just before “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hit theaters in 2017, Disney let slip some exciting news: the film’s director, Rian Johnson, was gearing up to create a whole new trilogy set in the Star Wars universe. But with the divisive reception of “The Last Jedi” and lots of skepticism about the new trilogy, many fans wondered if these movies would ever happen, especially after so much time had passed since the initial announcement. Still, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy assured fans at Star Wars Celebration events that Rian Johnson was still onboard to make it all happen.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone to promote his show “Poker Face”, Rian spilled the beans on the status of his Star Wars trilogy. He revealed that not much had happened with the project because he got swept up in making “Knives Out” instead. Rian shared that there were some brainstorming sessions with Kathleen Kennedy, but nothing concrete ever materialized. The timeline just didn’t quite line up for him to dive into it. He did mention that if the opportunity arose in the future to return to Star Wars, he’d be all in.

When asked how developed his ideas for the trilogy were, Rian admitted that they were pretty conceptual. With “Knives Out” taking precedence, there wasn’t a detailed outline or plan in place for the Star Wars trilogy. It seems like he had to shelve those plans for the time being.

Lucasfilm has announced a slew of Star Wars projects over the years, especially for Disney+, focusing more on shows rather than films. But now the studio is shifting gears back to the big screen, with several movies in development, including one based on “The Mandalorian” and another called “Starfighter”. The lineup also includes projects from a variety of creative talents like Taika Waititi, Patty Jenkins, and more.

Despite the buzz around these projects, fans have learned to take Disney’s announcements with a grain of salt, given the history of delayed or canceled films. It’s a reminder that Disney should wait until projects are further along before hyping them up. The hope is that these new Star Wars ventures will deliver on fan expectations and regain the trust of audiences.
