TV Guide: July 7th-13th – Top Shows to Watch

Netflix is kicking off a brand new musical experiment with a show called Building the Band. It’s like a mashup of The Voice, Love is Blind, and Korean survival shows all rolled into one. Imagine 50 individuals coming together to showcase their singing talents live, all without being seen by the audience. If a contestant impresses the others with their voice, they hit a button to form a group. Only six groups will make it to the main stage, where we’ll see if these solo artists can set aside their egos and work together. Hosted by Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, mentored by Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger, and judged by Kelly Rowland and the late Liam Payne, it’s a talent show like no other. Catch it on Netflix this Wednesday.

And if you’re in the mood for some comedy, Lena Dunham is back with a new sitcom called Too Much. Based partly on her own life, the show follows an American named Jessica who moves to London in search of a romantic comedy-worthy life. What she finds, however, is far from romantic, as she navigates relationships in a city that’s nothing like the movies. Starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe, with music by Dunham’s husband Luis Felber, it’s a quirky and entertaining look at life in a new city. Available on Netflix this Thursday.

Looking for something with a historical twist? Tune in to The Great Plague with Rob Rinder & Ruth Goodman. Together, they explore how London handled a different kind of pandemic in the past, full of secret burials and strange cures. It’s a fascinating look at a dark time in history, airing on Channel 5 this Thursday.

And if sci-fi is more your style, don’t miss Foundation on Apple TV+. The series follows a group called the Foundation who use psychohistory to predict a grim future. In the upcoming season, they face an unpredictable force called The Mule, who can control minds. With an all-star cast including Jared Harris and Pilou Asbæk, it’s a thrilling ride through a dystopian world. Catch it this Friday on Apple TV+.
