Katherine Heigl Discusses Kids’ Phone Habits: Are They Addicts?
Katherine Heigl and her husband, Josh Kelley, decided to set some ground rules for phone use for their three kids, who are aged 16, 13, and 8. The actress realized the need for change when she noticed her children becoming too attached to their devices, describing them as “little addicts.”
These changes were put in place last September after Heigl saw her kids’ grades slipping. She mentioned that they had always enforced a rule of no phones at bedtime, but there were instances of sneaking devices, staying up late, and not getting enough sleep, leading to crankiness the next day. Recognizing that this behavior wasn’t healthy, she and Kelley decided it was time to make a change.
Heigl shared that they had initially planned to wait until their eldest was 16 before giving her a phone, but they realized it wasn’t feasible in today’s world. They found a balance by setting specific restrictions on phone usage.
The Grey’s Anatomy star admitted that implementing these rules wasn’t easy at first. There was an adjustment period where the kids experienced feelings of anger, boredom, and frustration. However, Heigl and Kelley stayed committed to the plan, offering each other pep talks to get through the challenging transition.
Over time, the family noticed positive changes. The kids started developing other interests, and Heigl felt relieved to see the improvement. She emphasized the importance of teaching kids self-regulation and discipline, as these are skills that need to be learned.
It wasn’t a smooth journey, but Heigl believes that sticking to these tough rules helped break the addictive habits her children had formed with their phones. By setting boundaries and providing guidance, the family was able to create a healthier balance in their digital interactions.
