Euro 2025: Spain Coach Tomé Optimistic About Aitana Bonmatí’s Fitness

Spain’s national soccer team is gearing up for the European Championship opener against Portugal, and coach Montse Tomé is optimistic about midfielder Aitana Bonmatí’s recovery from viral meningitis. Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, was hospitalized last week but has made a quick comeback to join her teammates in Switzerland.

Coach Tomé shared in a prematch press conference that Bonmatí’s progress has been positive, with the midfielder participating in training sessions to prepare for the upcoming game. Despite Bonmatí’s eagerness to play, the coaching staff is cautious about managing her return to the field to prioritize her health.

In addition to Bonmatí, goalkeeper Cata Coll also faced uncertainty due to tonsillitis but is expected to be fit for the match. However, Spain will be missing captain Irene Paredes, serving a suspension for a red card received during the qualification phase last year.

Spain is placed in a competitive group alongside Italy, Belgium, and Portugal but is considered a strong contender to advance to the quarterfinals and potentially win the tournament. While the team acknowledges the high expectations, midfielder Patri Guijarro emphasized the need to focus on each game and not get ahead of themselves.

As Spain prepares for the European Championship, the players are determined to perform well and showcase their skills on the field. With strong competition from other top teams like England, Germany, and France, Spain is focused on taking each match as it comes and staying committed to their goal of winning the championship.
