Video shows man stealing 3 baby peacocks in Fort Lauderdale
A Fort Lauderdale neighborhood is reeling after a disturbing incident caught on camera. A woman, Vicki Smith, recently spoke out about a man who was seen on surveillance video snatching three baby peacocks from outside her brother’s home. The incident occurred in the Shady Banks neighborhood on Southwest 13th Court. Smith expressed her distress, saying, “It makes you sick to your stomach because they’re clearly, this person is preying on these tiny defenseless creatures. They don’t have any defenses.”
The video footage shows the man pulling up in a pickup truck, holding what appears to be bait, and then taking off with three peachicks while leaving the mother behind. Smith explained that the mother peacock was visibly distressed and running in circles after the incident. She believes the babies were targeted because one of them is a rare white color, which can fetch a high price on the market.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that permits are required for wildlife removal activities, but the rules can vary by location. Smith hopes that by sharing the video, the man responsible will be identified, and his motives can be uncovered. Fort Lauderdale Police are planning to reach out to Smith for more information and investigate the incident further.
This cruel act has deeply affected the community, with widespread support for finding the perpetrator. Fort Lauderdale Police are asking anyone with information to come forward and assist in resolving this situation. Let’s hope that justice is served, and the baby peacocks are returned to safety soon.
