Classic TV Remake Leaving Streaming Platform Soon as Licensing Deal Expires
As the calendar flips to a new month, Netflix gears up to add fresh content to its vast library, bidding farewell to several shows and movies in the process. July will mark the departure of thirteen Disney shows from the streaming service, along with seventeen ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries over the next eighteen months. Among these departures is “The Wonder Years,” a reimagining of the beloved 1980s classic TV series, which will be leaving Netflix in just two days.
“The Wonder Years” remake made its debut in 2021 on ABC, running for two seasons before its cancellation in 2023. The series followed 12-year-old Dean Williams (Elisha “EJ” Williams) as he navigated life in Montgomery, Alabama, accompanied by his on-screen family. With Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, Julian Lerner, Amari O’Neil, and Milan Ray rounding out the cast, the show featured narration by Don Cheadle and was produced by Saladin Patterson, Lee Daniels, and Marc Velez of Lee Daniels Entertainment. The series drew inspiration from the original 1988 show, sprinkling in nods to the earlier classic for fans to enjoy.
In addition to “The Wonder Years,” a range of other Disney projects are set to bid adieu to Netflix in the coming months, including shows like “This is Us,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “Lost,” along with a lineup of ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries. So if you’re a fan of the show or any of the departing titles, now is the time to catch them before they’re no longer available.
