Cillian Murphy Stars as Reform School Teacher: First Look at ‘Steve’
Cillian Murphy steps into the role of a teacher facing a tough challenge in the upcoming drama Steve. Based on Max Porter’s novel Shy, the film portrays Murphy as Steve, alongside Jay Lycurgo as Shy.
Directed by Tim Mielants and featuring a screenplay by Porter, Steve follows a significant day in the life of headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school in the mid-’90s. The story delves into Steve’s struggle to protect the school from closure while also dealing with his own mental health issues.
The film also highlights the character of Shy, a troubled teen trying to navigate his inner turmoil and the destructive path laid out before him. The star-studded cast includes Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson in supporting roles.
For Murphy, known for his work in Oppenheimer and upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, Steve is a personal project. As the son of two educators, the role resonates with him on a deep level. And fans can catch him in action when Steve hits select theaters in September and streams on Netflix starting October 3rd.
