Finally Watching the Only Spielberg Film I’ve Never Seen – Movie Review

Steven Spielberg is known for making fantastic movies, but have you seen them all? I thought I had until recently when I finally got around to watching his second film, The Sugarland Express, which is now available on Netflix. While some of Spielberg’s movies, like Ready Player One and 1941, may not be my top favorites, he is undoubtedly a consistent director who delivers quality films almost every time.

Unlike his well-known classics, The Sugarland Express doesn’t get as much attention. But after watching it, I can confidently say it’s a hidden gem. The movie revolves around a mother, played by Goldie Hawn, who orchestrates a daring escape with her husband to get their child back. As expected, things don’t go as planned, and they end up on a thrilling chase by the police.

What sets The Sugarland Express apart is its emotional depth. Goldie Hawn’s performance, in particular, is outstanding. She portrays the complex character of Lou Jean Poplin flawlessly, balancing her selfishness with deep love for her child. Watching her on screen is a captivating experience that adds a personal touch to the film.

While Spielberg’s first movie, Duel, is a gripping thriller, The Sugarland Express surpasses it in evoking genuine empathy from the audience. The range of emotions portrayed in the film makes it a more intimate and memorable viewing experience. So, if you thought you’ve seen all of Spielberg’s works, don’t forget to check out this hidden gem on Netflix.
