WB Games to Concentrate on Four Franchises
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that its video game unit will be focusing on four core franchises: “Game of Thrones,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Harry Potter,” and the DC Universe. This move comes as the company prepares to split into two entities in mid-2026, with the video game division becoming part of the ‘Streaming & Studios’ spinoff.
Some of the prominent developers under Warner Bros. Games include Rocksteady Studios, Avalanche Software, NetherRealm Studios, and TT Games. The refocus of the unit, which involves shuffling some executives, aims to address the erratic results from the division.
While 2023 saw success with the top-selling title “Hogwarts Legacy” and the “Mortal Kombat 1” reboot, 2024 brought disappointments with two live-service titles— “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” and “MultiVersus”. The cancellation of high-profile games, including a “Wonder Woman” title, raised concerns among fans.
Despite past setbacks, Warner Bros. Discovery has shown an interest in enhancing its live-service offerings. Fans worry that a potential “Hogwarts Legacy 2” could follow a similar microtransaction-heavy path. Stay tuned for updates on the company’s gaming endeavors!
