Deep Cover Movie Review: A Look at Why Letting the ‘Jurassic World’ Director Make an Action Comedy
Deep Cover just hit Prime Video, and it’s got the internet buzzing, but not necessarily in a good way. Directed by Tom Kingsley, whose work you might recognize from This Is Going to Hurt, Doctor Who, and the UK version of Ghosts, the film reunites the writing/producing team from the Jurassic World movies. Yep, we’re talking about Derek Connelly and Colin Trevorrow, the duo behind the dino-filled adventures. They’ve also brought on board Ben Ashenden, who had a small role in Jurassic World: Dominion, and the star herself, Bryce Dallas Howard.
In this action comedy, a struggling improv teacher teams up with two of her students to infiltrate a criminal drug operation. With actors like Paddy Considine, Sean Bean, and Ian McShane on board, you’d think it couldn’t miss. But alas, it falls short of expectations.
Critics are split on the film. While some find it marginally better than expected, others can’t help but feel disappointed. One thing everyone agrees on is that Paddy Considine delivers, and well, you can always count on Sean Bean to, well, be Sean Bean.
Unfortunately, Deep Cover struggles with a lackluster script that fails to develop characters or relationships. The humor falls flat, despite efforts from the cast. Orlando Bloom, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Nick Mohammed do their best with what they’re given, but it’s not quite enough.
Ultimately, Deep Cover feels like a missed opportunity. It ambles along without ever really finding its footing. Some might find it passable as background noise, but it’s not likely to leave a lasting impression. Maybe give it a watch if you’ve got nothing else going on, but don’t expect too much.
