Disney to Pay Nearly $439 Million to Finalize Hulu Streaming Acquisition
Disney is making moves in the streaming world by completing the purchase of Hulu from Comcast’s NBCUniversal for a hefty sum of nearly $439 million. This deal gives Disney full control of the popular streaming service after a lengthy appraisal process.
Hulu, which started back in 2007, quickly became a go-to platform for TV shows backed by entertainment giants like Disney. Over the years, Disney gradually increased its stake in Hulu and gained majority control after acquiring 21st Century Fox. With this recent purchase, Disney solidifies its position in the streaming market.
The appraisal process had its challenges, with Disney initially agreeing to pay at least $8.6 billion for a 33% stake in Hulu. However, after evaluation, Disney’s appraiser valued the stake below the guaranteed floor value, while NBCUniversal’s appraiser valued it substantially higher. A third appraiser was brought in, determining that Disney will pay $438.7 million to complete the deal.
Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, expressed relief that the resolution is finally in place, highlighting the positive partnership with NBCUniversal. With this acquisition, Disney aims to deepen its footprint in the streaming landscape and offer viewers an even broader range of content.
