Why Rick Flag Sr. Looks Different in Superman: Explained
James Gunn, the director of the upcoming movie Superman, recently released an image featuring Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Many fans have noticed that Grillo’s hair is black in Superman, while it is white in the Creature Commandos animated series.
Grillo provides the voice for Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, and Gunn explained in a previous interview that the change in hair color happened because Grillo was working on another project, Tulsa King, at the time. Gunn revealed that they initially planned for Grillo to dye his hair white for the role, but opted for black due to the challenges of temporary hair dye on dark hair.
Despite the visual inconsistency, Grillo is playing the same character, and Gunn has confirmed that the DCU animation and live-action are interconnected. Grillo will also be in Peacemaker Season 2. While fans may be curious about the different looks, real-life logistics sometimes lead to these variations.
In response to questions about future hair color changes for Grillo, Gunn joked that Rick Flag Sr. dyes his hair, hinting that the character is vain and enjoys attention to his ego. Gunn even released the image on Frank Grillo’s birthday and emphasized the connection between the live-action and animated versions of the character.
Superman hits theaters on July 11th, while Peacemaker Season 2 premieres on Thursday, August 21st on HBO Max. So, despite the hair color difference, fans can look forward to seeing Frank Grillo in action in both projects.
