Robin Padilla stands firm on MTRCB bill despite pushback from directors and actors guilds

Robin Padilla remains resolute in his support for Senate Bill No. 2805, which aims to expand the authority of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to oversee online content. This move has faced criticism from the directors and actors’ guild. The bill, sponsored by Padilla, seeks to empower the MTRCB to regulate streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and HBO Max. It was recently approved by the Senate on June 2.

Despite the concerns raised by the Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, Inc. (DGPI) and Aktor PH, Padilla clarified on his Facebook page that the proposed amendment is not intended to target artists and filmmakers but rather to safeguard families and the nation’s culture. He emphasized that discipline and guidance enhance art and its impact on society.

Padilla articulated that the primary aim of the bill is to strengthen the MTRCB’s role in providing guidance and classifying content on the internet and digital platforms. As these platforms have become the main source of entertainment, Padilla believes that regulatory frameworks should evolve alongside technology. He expressed appreciation for the feedback from the DGPI and opponents of the bill, highlighting the importance of finding common ground to strike a balance between freedom, responsibility, and artistic expression.

MTRCB Chair Diorella “Lala” Sotto-Antonio endorsed the bill, emphasizing the need for structured cooperation between streaming platforms and the regulatory body. While some in the film industry have criticized the bill, suggesting it could turn the MTRCB into a revenue source for the government, Padilla remains focused on his goal of ensuring that regulations evolve in tandem with the rapidly changing entertainment landscape.
