Netflix Should Consider ‘The Wheel Of Time’ After Amazon Cancels Top Live-Action Fantasy Show
It’s been a bit of a rough time for fantasy shows lately. Ever since Game Of Thrones became a massive hit, streaming platforms have been trying, and not quite succeeding, to capture that magic. Amazon took a shot with two big fantasy series: The Rings Of Power and The Wheel Of Time.
Unfortunately, The Wheel Of Time got the axe so The Rings Of Power could keep going, leaving many fans scratching their heads. One notable fan who spoke out about this is author Brandon Sanderson, who finished the last three books in Robert Jordan’s series.
“I do think it’s a shame,” Sanderson mentioned on his YouTube channel, “as while I had my problems with the show, it had a fanbase who deserved better than a cancellation after the best season. I won’t miss being largely ignored; they wanted my name on it for legitimacy, but not to involve me in any meaningful way.”
I think Sanderson has a point. While The Wheel Of Time did take some major detours from the original books and had a rough start, Season 3 really found its stride and showed potential. It’s currently the best live-action fantasy series on Prime Video, and honestly, one of the few worth watching these days. Plus, with the lackluster reception of House Of The Dragon’s second season, the future of epic fantasy on screen is looking a little dim.
Fans are holding out hope that another streaming service might swoop in and rescue the show. Netflix, in particular, could be a good fit. They’ve had some bumps in the road with their own fantasy series but have the resources to make it work. Plus, over 124,000 fans have signed a petition to save The Wheel Of Time, so there’s a built-in audience ready to support the show.
While it may seem like a long shot, I genuinely think that The Wheel Of Time on Netflix could be a smart move for everyone involved. It would give Netflix the epic fantasy series they’ve been looking for and show Amazon a thing or two in the process. It’s a win-win situation.
In the meantime, I’ll keep championing for more animated fantasy series. An animated Lord Of The Rings or Prydain Chronicles adaptation would be fantastic. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a reboot of The Walking Dead in animated form one day.
For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. But as they say, rebellions are built on hope.
