Owen Wilson Reflects on Grief Through Comedy in “Stick”
Apple TV+ is stepping up to the tee with Stick, their latest sports-themed series starring Owen Wilson. Following the success of Ted Lasso, Stick aims to capture the hearts of audiences with a story about a former pro golfer named Pryce Cahill (played by Wilson) who finds himself in the rough of a divorce and midlife crisis. When he takes a troubled young protégé under his wing, played by Peter Dager, Pryce must navigate loss and heartbreak, all while trying to maintain his signature optimism.
At the premiere of Stick, Wilson opened up about how humor helped his family cope with life’s challenges. Drawing from his father’s example, Wilson shared that his dad used humor to navigate disappointments, a trait that left a lasting impression on him. Exploring his Irish roots, Wilson reflected on how humor was a vital tool in his family’s coping mechanism, a sentiment echoed by his co-stars.
Mariana Treviño, who plays a role in the series, praised Wilson’s ability to infuse comedy with emotional complexity, allowing him to portray a character like Pryce authentically. Marc Maron, another cast member, highlighted Wilson’s natural inclination to lighten heavy themes with humor, a quality that shines through in Stick.
With directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris at the helm, Stick promises viewers a unique golfing experience, complete with innovative techniques that capture the essence of the sport. The show boasts a cast featuring names like Luke Wilson, Judy Greer, Lilli Kay, Timothy Olyphant, and creator Jason Keller, adding depth and diversity to the narrative.
Stick is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on June 4, with the first three episodes dropping at once, followed by weekly releases up until July 23. So, grab your clubs and get ready to tee off with Stick on Apple TV+!
